Pioneers: Isle of Wight net-zero pathfinder
Alongside the Isle of Wight Council, ERMC and Nqiringminds, our research is uncovering non-technical barriers standing in the way of Isle of Wight net zero.

Project overview
Pioneers Isle of Wight Pathfinder is funded and overseen by Innovate UK —part of UK Research and Innovation. The project aims to uncover non-technical barriers standing in the way of achieving a fully carbon-neutral Isle of Wight by 2040.
Future Isle of Wight’s role is to provide research data and tools to the Isle of Wight Council and local businesses so that they can develop innovative solutions to overcome obstacles and accelerate the transition to net zero.
But what exactly is a non-technical barrier to achieving net zero?
- We’ve already uncovered significant supply chain shortcomings on the Isle of Wight when it comes to grant-funded retrofit.
- Many people aren’t aware of the upgrades available for homes and businesses, and complicated industry jargon compounds the issue.
- The sharing of knowledge, data and best practices across sectors and departments is currently disparate and unstructured.
What the project will deliver

Community portal
Built by our partners Nqiringminds, the community portal will encourage collaboration and interoperability between various stakeholders and authorities, helping them develop strategies and tools to address non-technical challenges.
The portal will offer shared file access and discussion forums while acting as a central repository to share data and API standards.
Case studies and data
Future Isle of Wight’s community events are a fantastic forum to discuss concepts like retrofit with the general public. Our grant-funded home upgrade projects also give us plenty of inside knowledge about local supply chains.
Armed with this information, we’ll provide data and case studies for the community portal, helping commercial stakeholders and the local authority improve their net-zero strategies.

Actionable whitepapers
When the 18-month research project is complete, we’ll create whitepapers for local and national distribution.
By sharing our findings with a wider audience, we hope to shine a light on the challenges and obstacles standing in the way of net zero.
Your Opinion Matters!
And it could help you win a £50 M&S voucher.
As part of the Isle of Wight Pathfinders project we’re asking Islanders to complete a survey to learn how they feel about energy-saving home upgrades. All answers are anonymous, and if you get our bonus competition question correct, you’ll be entered into a prize draw for a £50 M&S voucher.
How the competition works: We’ll enter those who answered the bonus question correctly into https://wheelofnames.com to generate a random winner. Only one entry per person is permitted. Check our privacy policy for more details on data security.
